Leading Lando: The Final Laps - Can he do it?
Mclaren driver Lando Norris reclaimed his position leading the Drivers World Championship from his teammate Oscar Piastri in Mexico. Now with the season end nearing, can he take the title?
The end to the 2025 Formula One Season is fast approaching in early December, with Mclaren’s Driver Lando Norris now retaking his former position leading the Driver’s World Championship.
Norris was able to retake his position in the championship after the Mexico City Grand Prix on October 26th, where he secured the win and closed the gap in points to his fellow Mclaren teammate — Oscar Piastri. The two drivers have been continuously performing brilliantly throughout the 2025 Season, with Piastri taking 9 wins — and Norris taking 7 wins. However, after the Mexico City Grand Prix, Lando was ahead by a 1 point gap to his teammate as Oscar finished P5 and there was a 14-point-gap previously.
After his success that weekend, Norris was able to take his lead further as he had a dream weekend in São Paulo at the Brazilian Grand Prix 2 weeks ago — taking P1 in every pratice, sprint qualifying, the sprint itself, qualifying and then went on to win the race on the Sunday. But now with the Las Vegas Grand Prix approaching this weekend, all eyes are on Lando.
Because of his successful last few weekends, people are assuming that he has the chance to go on to win the championship within the next two race weekends — that being the Las Vegas Grand Prix, or in Qatar for the Qatar Grand Prix. With this in mind, whether he out performs Oscar — he does have the chance to take it, since between the two Mclaren drivers there is now a 24-point-gap. But anything could happen in these next few races, therefore all the cards are on the table — and fate hangs in the balance amongst both Mclaren drivers.
However if Lando Norris can try and outscore Oscar Piastri by two points in Qatar, he would win the Driver’s Championship. But, this would mean Lando would have to score points within P1-P7 of that race weekend. It also means that 4-time-world-champion Max Verstappen has a capability to still be a contender to take the drivers championship, as he has a 49 point gap to Norris — meaning if he did in fact win the next two races, he still has a probable chance of winning his 5 consecutive world title.
As an exciting last few weeks until the final race of the year in Abu Dhabi, any outcome is possible — and for the number 4 driver of Mclaren, these next few weekends will be crucial for him, but also for securing his first World Drivers Championship Title at 26 years old. Lando Norris has a lot to think about, now with a childhood dream in his grasp in a matter of weeks.
The real question being — can he do it?
